Kingston
The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is a rail-trail that travels 72 miles from Plummer to Mullan along the Coeur d'Alene River. You and Fido can access the trail at Riverview Drive inside of Kingston. This wide, asphalt trail is great for walking with your leashed fur-buddy and the multi-use route is also wheelchair accessible. If you head west, the path is largely downhill. Pawsome! Scenic mountains and a lake provide interest, along with several types of animals, birds and reptiles. Be aware that while there is no potable water source along the way, many businesses are happy to fill your water bottles and give Fido a drink. With 19 trailheads, you have many choices for exiting to visit the communities along the way, find a good meal, or even stay the night. Woofderful!

Cataldo
About 3 miles from Kingston is the town of Cataldo, where you’ll find the Old Mission State Park, named for the Mission of the Sacred Heart that resides within it. Built in 1850, the mission contains a museum and is a favorite spot for picturesque weddings, but the park that surrounds it is what interests Fido the most. Containing 7 walking trails, the park features several outdoor places of interest including old cemeteries and a mining exhibit, along with a lovely picnic area near the parking lot and trailhead. All of the trails are connected, and some are looped, and their total length of more than 4 miles will take you and a leashed Fido through wetlands, forest and fields. Woofderful!

Harrison
Harrison is a community west of Kingston and is home to the Coeur d’Alene National Forest, which spans several communities and is shared with Montana. The forest’s over 726,000 acres features many miles of hiking trails that will thrill you and your fur-pup. It also features many spots where you can set up camp, along with cabins for rent. One of the popular trails within the park is the Marie Creek Trail, an 8.3 out-and-back that is considered moderate because it begins with a steep climb, followed by a quick descent. Featuring a river as part of the terrain, it also offers fabulous views from the highest trail point, and your fur-buddy is welcome to join you on this and any hike in the forest. Another favorite is the easy Revett Lake trail, a 4.8-mile loop that features a waterfall and lots of nature to observe with wildflowers and wildlife in abundance.

Coeur d’Alene City Center
The City Center of Coeur d’Alene is where you’ll find the McEuen Park and Dog Park, located where the Spokane River expands into Lake Coeur d’Alene before continuing to Spokane as the Columbia River. This waterfront location with 23 acres is a perfect backdrop for many features, including a huge playground for the kids, and an even bigger grassy area for kite-flying and relaxing. Best of all, in Fido’s mind, is the pawsome off-leash dog run, divided into large and small dog areas, featuring water fountains, waste bags and receptacles, and convenient parking for the humans. What a great place to take your furry bestie for some socializing and exercise! Arf!

Saint Maries City Center
Saint Maries is a small city to the west of Kingston, and it contains the St. Joe National Forest, one of the 3 forests comprising the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, the other 2 being Coeur d’Alene and Kasniksu, north of Kingston. The St. Joe covers approximately 900,000 acres and contains at least 6 named and sanctioned dog-friendly campgrounds, including Emerald Creek. With 17 sites that accommodate RVs and tents, the large and woodsy campground features private, shaded spots, all equipped with tables and grills for those dinner dates with your woofer. It also provides access to the Garnet Digging Area, where you may find a Star Garnet if you’re lucky! This is one of only 2 places in the world where Star Garnets are found, the other being India! Pawrrific!
