In the center of Puna County, you will find the little gem known as Hawaiian Acres. The neighborhood is all residential with some shops spread throughout the town. The Waiakea Forest Reserve is a short drive to the north of Hawaiian Acres and is a lovely place for you to take your pup on a healthy weekend hike. You will want to grab your harness and some of your buddies and head up to the mountainside with plenty of water and waste bags for all of your companions. The one wagging his tail next to you gets the treats you stashed in your pocket, of course!

Fern Acres

Fern Acres

Fern Acres is a quiet and beautiful neighborhood located adjacent to Hawaiian Acres. There are oodles of single-family homes available along the residential streets here if you are looking for the pawfect home with a fenced yard for your whole family to play in (furry members included, of course). You can take your pup for a long walk along Waimaka O Pele Road and admire the Kopua Farmlots that are just across the street. These lots look like lush forests, but they are home to coffee beans and other wonderful aromatic crops that the rest of the world adores!

Mountain View

Mountain View

Mountain View is a large but sparsely populated village to the north of Hawaiian Acres. You will find plenty of room for you and your dog to roam on an afternoon or a Saturday morning after a long week. Mountain View Park is a small, local green space that is simply pawfect for families with dogs. You will just need to keep your furry friend on-leash and clean up after him before you head to your next stop. The Olaa Forest Reserve is an expansive forest where you can bring a group of friends and their dogs on a morning hike. Just be sure to obey posted signs and clean up after yourselves and your pups.

Eden Roc

Eden Roc

Eden Roc is a residential and farming area that has a mixture of dense forest and beautiful homes in small clearings. If you are looking for a home with a little bit of extra privacy, Eden Roc is a wonderful option for you to check out with your canine kiddo. Kaimu Beach Park is a 50-minute drive away from Eden Roc, making for the perfect day trip if you want to head to the beaches on a nice weekend. There is a local farmers' market there as well as a grassy green space called Kaimu Park for a full day of fun!
Fern Forest

Fern Forest is a pupperific neighborhood that rests in between Olaa Forest and Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve, which makes it simply pawfect for nature lovers who enjoy a forest view when they step onto their porch every morning. Hawaii Adventure Tours offer guided tours and hikes that are dog-friendly throughout the volcanic areas nearby. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour's drive away, and many of the guided tours explore this area. You will need a hiking harness, plenty of water, waste bags, snacks, and a good sturdy hiking pack with you for your adventures through the forest.
