Coralville Strip

Tummy rumbling? Head to the main centre of Coralville for a selection of great pup-friendly eateries. Pancheros Mexican Grill has seven outdoor tables where your pup can sit by your side while you tuck into a delicious burrito, taco or quesadilla. Which Wich is a little sandwich shop with big variety; try a meatball grinder, Wicked Wich or Superfood Wich. Enjoy a hot cup of joe at Caribou Coffee, or a sweet end to the day at Cold Stone Creamery. These places also allow dogs at one of their outdoor tables. After your meal, take a wander with your leashed pup around St Morrison Park’s duck pond.

North Dodge St/ North Dubuque Rd

Thornberry off-leash dog area in Iowa City is a pup-tastic place for your dog to really stretch his legs. With fenced areas set in 12 acres of space, there is room for pups of every size. Should your pup fancy a swim, there is a pond here, and hoses to rinse him down afterwards. Agility equipment is provided for extra fun, and the sheltered seating areas ensure you have a relaxing time watching over your pooch as he burns off some energy. Memberships are available should you wish to visit frequently, as well as day passes, and can be paid at the entrance. Waterworks Prairie Park is also in this area, where you can take your pup for an on-lead walk along some of the trails.

Oxford/ Tiffin

In neighbouring Oxford is the FW Kent Park, a perfect place to enjoy some nature with your dog. The 1,052 acres provides space for adventurous pups and their owners to go out on a hike along some of the nine miles of trails, including one around the 27-acre lake. Home of the Johnson County Conservation Board Headquarters and the Conservation Education Center, this area is a great place to learn more about the local prairie and wetlands with the self-guided exhibit panels dotted along the walkways. Your pup will have a great walk here with you, but he will need to stay on a lead, and don’t forget to clean up after him if need be.

Northside and Goosetown

Another great place to soak up some nature is in the Hickory Hill Park in nearby Iowa City, covering 190 acres of forest, prairie and wetlands. Hickory Hill Park has three main entrances and well-marked paths to traverse. The landscape is diverse, so you and your dog will have no shortage of scenic surroundings to marvel at as you wander amongst the trees, over Ralston Creek and out into the prairie. Your dog will need to stay leashed here, and it is a good idea to bring water, clean up bags and any snacks you might like to enjoy along the way. There are seating areas and picnic tables for when you are ready for a little rest.

Lone Tree

On the Iowa City and Lone Tree border, just seven miles east of Coralville in Iowa City, is Rita’s Ranch Dog Park at Scott Park. Your dog will have a great time running around off-lead in one of the two fenced areas in this three-acre park. To access the dog park, you will need a permit or day pass which is available from the Iowa City Animal Services. There is ample parking close by in Scott Park, which itself covers 43 acres and is a lovely area to explore with your dog back on the lead. There are picnic tables, a shelter, a playground and sporting fields here as well.
