Wag! Walkers know West Woodland
West Woodland is one of the oldest north Seattle
neighborhoods and its long and storied history is something that residents are
very proud of. At the southeast corner of Ballard and just west of Wallingford
and Green Lake, this neighborhood is conveniently located for work, play, and
shopping. There is a large commercial sector along the Lake Washington Ship
Canal that has an assortment of coffee stands and shops, stores, microbreweries, and more.
There is a doggy daycare and a
small pet store available inside of West Woodland and, if you venture out of the neighborhood
to the east, you will find more places that carry your pup's favorite treats.
Weather in Seattle makes walking a pleasant pastime. While you may have to dodge
a few rainstorms, you won’t have much subfreezing weather to face and snow
is a rarity that will rarely hamper your efforts to give Fido some outdoor
time.
What is the terrain like in West Woodland?
In Seattle, it is quite rare to find an entire neighborhood as
flat as West Woodland. You will find a few small hills here and there, but they
are all easily avoided if that is your wish. Since
you do not have to go far to find hills, it should not hamper those that welcome
the challenge of hilly terrain.
West Woodland
does have sidewalks in most of the neighborhood, making it easy to stay out of
traffic's way. Some of the sidewalks have shoulders that allow your dog to
explore a bit of grass and trees. Traffic can be a problem through West Woodland, as there are several busy streets running through the area, but there are also
quiet areas in the neighborhood. Depending on how far you want to walk, you may
be able to avoid them.
Leary Way , 14th Avenue, Market, and 8th Avenue are all roads that carry a heavier load of traffic and might be best to avoid.
How many greenways are there in West Woodland?
There are a few green spaces available in and near West Woodland. Gilman Playground is not much more than a small park, but if you are out walking and want to find a place to stop where Fido can play in the grass, then this park can certainly offer that. You also have access to the Burke Gilman Trail in West Woodland, but it is not much of a greenway. There are small patches of grass, but as you head farther in either direction, you will find more grass and trees surrounding the trail as well as 27 miles to explore.
If you are looking for larger green spaces, your best option is to head to Woodland Park and Green Lake where there is room to roam. The lake has a 2.8-mile trail around it and the park has both trails and hills to explore. There is also an off-leash area for your pup to enjoy.
