Wag! Walkers know Winchester Park
Winchester Park is a small community sandwiched in a fold of
the Pennypack Park. The community is made up of moderate-sized
single-family homes, most of which were built in the 1940s and 1950s. The entire
community is well-kept with streets that are tree-lined but have no sidewalks.
There are plenty of restaurants in the area, but none within the neighborhood and, while there are dog-friendly
parks further out, the entire community is backed up against Pennypack
Creek and Park.
Winchester Park, like most of
Philly, enjoys four distinctly different seasons. Spring and fall are lovely times
for the two of you to explore your neighborhood and the park. Summers can be a bit
on the hot side with temperatures in the upper 80s and plenty of humidity. Winters
are very cold with weeks of sub-freezing temperatures, heavy snows, and lots of
icy roads for the two of you to navigate on your daily walks together.
What is the terrain like in Winchester Park?
Within Winchester Park itself, the ground is pretty flat and
unexciting. The roads are lined with sidewalks in most areas, but in those that
aren't, be sure that you wear reflective or light-colored clothing. This will
make it much easier for you and your dog to be seen by those who live here as they
drive to work and home again.
Keep in mind that just because you live in a
paved neighborhood doesn’t mean you and your pooch can’t have a little fun with your
walks when you don't have time to take to the trails in Pennypack Park. Challenge
each other to see how many blocks you can cover each day to keep things fresh and interesting. You can vary the blocks you go around, take
long walks and short walks, or simply go around the block if you are in a hurry or
the weather is too nasty to go walking
in.
How many greenways are there in Winchester Park?
Beyond backyards, there really isn't much in the way of
greenways within the boundaries of Winchester Park. But then, who needs built-in
greenways when you have the entire nine miles of Pennypack Park to enjoy? The park
runs from the Delaware River all the way to Pine Rd. in Montgomery County. There
are over 1,600 acres of fields, meadows, wetlands, and woodlands for you and your pup to wander. The terrain here consists of rolling hills with miles
of paved and unpaved trails for the two of you to explore.
At one point in time, the Pennypack Creek powered a grist mill along with
several others over the course of time. Today, you can still see the Klein and
Verree houses, all that remains of this once industrial area that produced
textiles, edge tools, lumber, and flour. Today, this is an amazing walk and one
that you certainly can't complete in a single day!
