Wag! Walkers know West Philly
West Philadelphia, or as it is better known to those who live
here, "West Philly," is home to the Philadelphia Zoo and the University
of Pennsylvania. It is also home to Fairmount Park which is a nice large park for you and Fido to spend
time walking around in. Housing here ranges from typical Philly row houses to apartments
and single-family homes. There are several excellent
restaurants for you to sample in the northern section of town. But, if
you want a pet supply store, you will have to go for a bit of a drive. The same
applies to dog parks, but since you are
so close to the Philly Zoo and Fairmount Park, there are plenty of green spaces
for you and Fido to play in.
Summers here are fantastic
with temperatures in the 80s and plenty of sunny days for the two of you to spend time
out in the fresh air.
What is the terrain like in West Philly?
The terrain in the central part of the community tends to be suburban with lots of sidewalk-lined streets for the two of you to spend
time walking along. The ground here is relatively flat which can make for some
pretty lackluster walks unless you decide to be creative. The trick is for you and Fido to put together a number of walks
based on going around different blocks. Of course, if you are
looking for something a little more challenging, there are several parks and
green spaces for the two of you to check out.
Philly summers tend to
be in the high 80s which is hot enough during the day to heat the pavement up
to temperatures in excess of 135°F. Pavement
this hot can cause discomfort and burns if you're not careful. The best way to
avoid this is to take your walks early in the morning.
How many greenways are there in West Philly?
Within the bounds of West Philly,
there are several small parks for you and Fido to check out. Saunders Park covers
almost an entire block between Baring St. and Powelton Ave. The park is not much
more than a large patch of grass with plenty of shade trees and a walking trail
running through the middle of the park. It is also home to the Lancaster
Avenue Jazz and Arts Festival.
The big green space is Fairmount Park which is
split in two by the Schuylkill River. West Philly sits next to West Fairmount
Park where you and Fido will find acres of grass to play around in
and miles of trails to walk along. Along the way, you will find the Centennial
Arboretum, the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Course, the Please Touch Museum, and
so much more for you and Fido to check out together on your daily or weekly
walks!
