Wag! Walkers know Torresdale
Torresdale is separated by I-95 into Torresdale and East Torresdale.
Those who live west of the interstate tend to live in single-family homes in
carefully developed neighborhoods. Those on the east side tend more towards apartment
living. Like much of Philly, the area dates back into the 19th century. Today, is
it a family-friendly community surrounded by golf courses with the Delaware River
to the east. Commute time to the city is 10 minutes and, if you really want to
get out into the suburbs where the jobs are, the commute is only a half hour or
so. Pet stores are within driving distance as are dog-friendly parks.
The weather here ranges from below freezing for weeks at a time in the winter to hot and sunny with temperatures in the 80s during the summer
months. There are plenty of places to walk with your pup, including sidewalks on
most of the streets, making it safe for both of you.
What is the terrain like in Torresdale?
Welcome to suburban Philadelphia! The streets here have been
carefully laid out to make maximum use of space and to wrap around the two
golf courses. There is very little in the
way of challenging terrain here for you and your pup. Most of the area is flat but there
are a few areas with slight deviations.
The best way to make use of this type
of ground when you want to keep your walks interesting
is to try going around different blocks
or changing the directions in which you walk. Most of the streets are well-kept
and have wide sidewalks for you to walk on. If your dog is not accustomed to
walking on paved surfaces yet, you will have to take it slow. The idea
is to give the pads on your pup's paws time to toughen up to the point where they won't
end up being scratched and scraped.
How many greenways are there in Torresdale?
Beyond the two golf courses the community is built around, Torresdale
has a nice big park right next to the interstate. Fluehr Park covers 62 acres and
offers two baseball and sports fields along with a walking trail for the two of
you to enjoy. The park is so big that most people find it hard
to say they have walked all of it. It is a fantastic place to take your dog where they can run around for fun and exercise.
For a great hike, there is Pennypack Park that straddles the
Pennypack Creek running for nine miles along its banks. All told, there are 1,600 acres of grass and woodland for the
two of you to explore. The park covers rolling hills with both paved and
unpaved trails to hike along that pass historic buildings and a working farm. You
can't find anywhere better to go hiking with your pup on a sunny day in Northeast
Philly.
