Wag! Walkers know Southwest Schuylkill
Southwest Schuylkill is a small section of Kingsessing filled
with row houses, narrow streets, and apartment
buildings. While the community once had a reputation for high crime, large strides have been
made in bringing it under control.
There are a number of mom and pop businesses
in the community, but if you want pet supply stores, plan on driving out of the neighborhood and heading north
into Squirrel Hill.
For those who like the
warm weather, spring and summer here are wonderful with gentle rains and endless
sunny days. Of course, if cooler days are more your thing, then fall might be
just what you need. The days are sunny with cool,
crisp evenings that are perfect for sitting out on the porch. Winters, on the
other hand, can be a bit rough with weeks in which the thermometer never goes
above freezing. There is plenty of snow
most winters with up to 15 inches of it every year.
What is the terrain like in Southwest Schuylkill?
With row houses comes pavement and miles of narrow sidewalks with very little in the way of grass to walk on. Not only are most places
heavily paved, but at the same time, the ground here is relatively flat. So far,
we have flat pavement to walk along and blocks of almost identical row houses.
How on earth do you make going for walks with your pup any fun at all?
The trick when
you live in an urban housing area like this
is variety. To you, the blocks around you may all look just about the same, but your pooch sees things from a different point of view. By changing the directions in which you walk in and the blocks you go
around, you give your pup more variety, making the walks more enjoyable. For a change of pace, you can easily head over
to Bartram's Garden where there are plenty of
trails to explore.
How many greenways are there in Southwest Schuylkill?
Southwest Schuylkill has very little in the way of green to
work with. There are a few vacant lots around
the community that many dog owners use to let their pups run around on. Beyond this,
there are dog-friendly parks available
The Kingsessing Rec Center can be found on Kingsessing Ave.
This park offers a public pool, basketball courts, and plenty of grass for the two
of you to run around on and get in a little exercise. At 48th & Woodland, the playground offers a pair of
baseball fields, lots of parking, and even
more grass to run around on. A
long the riverbank
is Bartram's Gardens, a National Historic Landmark park covering 45 acres. Walk
along the trails as they wind through perfumed flower gardens, the upper
kitchen gardens, and along the river through delightful meadows. You can also
reach the park via boat as the park offers free docking, a very popular feature for boaters in the area.
