Wag! Walkers know Dennison Place
Dennison Place sits on the east side of the Olentangy
Freeway and is home to a large research complex, a large residential area consisting
of older single-family and multi-family housing, and numerous retail stores and
eateries. Many of those who live here either work in the research complex,
teach at Ohio State University, or are students.
While the homes here are large
and densely packed, the area maintains its
old-school charm with plenty of shade trees and wide sidewalks for you and Fido to take your daily walks on. To the west
of the research center is the Olentangy River which runs almost parallel to the
freeway.
With summer temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s, you and Fido are sure
to enjoy the shade trees lining the sidewalks. In the winter when temperatures are
below freezing, the trunks will help break up the wind, making it possible for
the two of you to continue walking most the season.
What is the terrain like in Dennison Place?
"Urban and flat" is the best way to describe the terrain here, but with an old-world charm. To
be sure, the residential area is laid out in regimented blocks, but unlike modern
planned communities, they have wide sidewalks and plenty of large shade trees. This alone will help to make your walks more
enjoyable. Unfortunately, there is not a large selection of streets in this area, so you may find that your walks will take you out to neighboring communities in addition to the Dennison Place neighborhood.
To the west, the Olentangy River will create a barrier to foot traffic that is venturing in that direction. You'll be better off traveling eastward to N High Street or north along Neil Avenue. These roads will provide access to several smaller residential streets, each with plenty of walkways and small grassy spots to take a quick break. Traffic shouldn't be too heavy away from the main roads, but keep your eyes peeled just to be safe!
How many greenways are there in Dennison Place?
Dennison Place does not have anything in the way of green space beyond the trail running alongside the river. Of course, you and Fido can follow
the path for miles alongside the river.
A short drive to the south will
bring you to Wheeler Memorial Park where you will find the Wheeler Dog Park. Wheeler Dog Park is a large park with separate
fenced-in areas for large and small dogs. There are water fountains in both
sections and lots of shade for you and your pup to enjoy during the
summer. Wheeler Dog Park is a great place
to bring your pooch so that they can learn to socialize with other dogs!
To the south, a smaller facility known as Thompson Park will provide a little over 4 acres of space to wander with your pup. It also has a playground, a recreation center, and basketball courts for those who are a little sportier.
