Wag! Walkers know Stateway Gardens
Stateway Gardens was, at one time, home to one of the many Chicago Housing Authority housing projects that fell into disrepair
and became a hotbed of crime. In 1995, the federal government took control of
all assets owned and operated by the CHA because of the ongoing allegations of
graft and corruption. The last building of the projects in Stateway Gardens was demolished in 2007. Today, the area is home
to a range of mixed-income housing in the form of apartments. Living here puts you within driving distance of a range of restaurants. You will have to drive to find the nearest pet supply store.
Being this close to the shores of Lake Michigan also means having
to deal with the winds and snows blowing in off the lake, driving the temperatures
significantly below freezing for what can seem like forever. Luckily, spring always comes
and with it, glorious warm weather!
What is the terrain like in Stateway Gardens?
The terrain in Stateway Gardens is flat and surprisingly green.
Once the projects were demolished, a park
was built, and much of the ground left open.
There are more phases of construction planned for the future. Taking your pup for a walk here can be pretty easy as long as you are okay letting them run around
in the park.
To vary things a little, you should consider heading east and
walking around a few blocks to add distance and to build stamina. Keep in mind
that walking on paved surfaces in the summer means having to get out there and
walk early in the morning as the surface of the sidewalk can quickly reach
temperatures hot enough to cause discomfort and burns. The opposite can be said of winters. When the temperatures are below freezing, the
pavement can be cold enough to cause frostbite. Exercise caution and be prepared for these different conditions!
How many greenways are there in Stateway Gardens?
Stateway Gardens includes an
extended area of grass and ball fields known as Stateway Park. There is
plenty of grass for the two of you to run around and play on. Along with this, the area also has a number of vacant lots, left behind from the CHA demolition teams that have been working to revitalize
the area.
If you want more green space, you
have only to drive to the shores of Lake Michigan. Here, you will find Burnham
Park stretching all the way from 31st St. down to Promontory Point. The park
offers miles of trails for you to hike along while you watch the
boats out on the lake. One of the walkways runs right along the waterside and
includes a pier. The trail also passes a number of baseball diamonds and other athletic
fields. It's a fabulous place to bring the family for a picnic and a fun day out in the sun!
