Wag! Walkers know South Chicago
South Chicago is a mostly
residential area of single-family and multi-family
homes on the shores of Lake Michigan. The community offers something that many others
no longer have: mom n' pop stores scattered throughout. No matter what you need, you can find it in a
nearby store from milk to dog food. There are several parks within the community
for you to play in and, of course,
there is the massive Park No. 566 on the shores of Lake Michigan. The houses here are separated by alleys and most of the streets have sidewalks and grassy
strips for pups to walk on.
Being right on the water means winters here are
likely to brutal when you factor in sub-freezing temperatures with lake effect snows and winds. But there is always summer on the lake with temperatures in
the 80s and plenty of sunshine for the two of you to get out and go walking
every chance you get.
What is the terrain like in South Chicago?
What can you say about the ground
in South Chicago that you can't say
about virtually every other community in the city? Not much as the land here is
just as flat as anywhere else in the region. You might think this would make for
some very dull walks, and to a certain extent,
you would be right. But this is only if
you lack imagination!
The trick is to think of all the blocks in your community
as a challenge for both you and your pup. How many blocks can you cover and can you
build up to include more? Which direction
should you go today? What about tomorrow? The more variation you can build into
your walks, the more both of you will continue to look forward to them. If you get tired of the pavement, you can
always go to one of the many parks in the area for a little play time on the
grass.
How many greenways are there in South Chicago?
South Chicago is a large community and has several small parks
for you and your dog to check out. Bessemer Park over on S. South Chicago Ave. offers a gym, numerous gardens, several baseball fields, and plenty of grass to play on. The
park also provides a series of trails
running around it for the two of you to take a hike on.
Just to the west of the South Shore
International College on E. 75th St. sits Rosenblum Park. This park offers three
baseball and softball fields, a football field, and a large area of grass.
Over on the shores of Lake Michigan is Park No. 566 which is essentially
acres of grass, trails, and waterfront. Many people bring their dogs
here to let them run around off-leash, but
keep in mind, that this is not a fenced-in
dog park. Be sure you keep your pooch in sight
and under control at all times.
