Wag! Walkers know Sauganash Woods
Sauganash Woods is a small community of large homes that started
construction in 1995. The community is surrounded by three cemeteries to the east,
the North Branch of the Chicago River to the south, and W. Bryn Mawr Ave. to the north. This is a very close-knit
community that is well-kept. Going for walks with Daisy should not be an issue with
so many green spaces surrounding the village. There are dog parks and pet supply stores
within easy driving distance along with numerous restaurants in the area to
check out.
For those of you who are new to
Chicago, the weather here runs from one extreme to the other. Winters offer
weeks of snow, ice, and below freezing temperatures, especially when the lake effect
winds blow. Summers can be filled with
hot days of endless sunshine that are perfect for spending the day hiking along
the river or out on the lake for those who have a boat.
What is the terrain like in Sauganash Woods?
Although the terrain here is not perfectly flat, what little
bit of variance there is tends to be hardly noticeable. The community does
offer sidewalks that run around the outer and inner ring of houses. The pavement
gives you somewhere to take Daisy for their daily walks and there are grassy berms for them to walk on when the pavement is
too hot.
The only problem with this
is that walking around the community every day can get a bit on the dull side. You can, of course, go for walks in the
cemeteries as there are plenty of paths running through them you and Daisy can
use to add to your walks. Or you can take
the trails through the woods that run alongside the North Branch of the Chicago
River. There are plenty of options to help
keep your hikes fun and exciting!
How many greenways are there in Sauganash Woods?
Sauganash Woods is surrounded
by green space. The three cemeteries to the east cover a vast area and have
plenty of trails running through that you and Daisy can wander around on.
Just on the other side of the river is Gompers
Park. The park actually straddles the
river and covers 39 acres including a lagoon, an area of rehabilitated wetlands.
Along with numerous athletic fields, there are trails along the river that will
take you and Daisy on a shaded journey deep into the woods and seemingly miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city into the
quiet of the woods. The trails will take you deep into the Forest Glen Woods
as long as you are up for the walk.
Living here also puts very close to the North
Park Village Nature Center, a 46-acre nature preserve that includes numerous hiking
trails, an educational center, and a birding area for you and Daisy to enjoy exploring
together.
