Wag! Walkers know Graceland West
Graceland West is a charming little neighborhood on the north side of Chicago filled with condos, duplexes, apartments, and townhomes. Here, you will find college students, families, young professionals, and retirees all
living together. Along Greenview Ave.,
the homes resemble miniature mansions as many of them were built during the Victorian era. Some of these homes have been converted into multi-unit housing for students
and young professionals. There aren't many restaurants in the immediate area,
but you don't have far to drive to find tasty
places to eat. The streets here are lined
with sidewalks and wide grass berms hidden under massive shade trees, making
them a great place to take a walk.
Winters
here can be harsh to live with, especially
when the winds come howling off the lake, driving the temperatures well below zero.
Often the winds drive heavy snows along with them, burying all of Chicago in many inches of snow.
What is the terrain like in Graceland West?
Graceland West is a carefully laid out network of residential
streets, along which you will find wide sidewalks and even wider stretches of grass for you to
stroll along. Summers here tend to be quite warm with temperatures in the high
80s. As long as the sidewalks are hidden in the shade, they tend to be quite cool, but don't be
fooled! When they are exposed to
direct sunlight, they can quickly become hot enough to cause burns to sensitive puppy paws. If you must walk during the summer
months, be sure to take your walks early in
the day.
In the winter
when the paths are covered in snow and
ice, you should train your pup to walk in doggie booties. Not only will this help
to keep their paws nice and clean, but it will also help to reduce the risk of frostbite.
How many greenways are there in Graceland West?
Throughout Graceland West, you will be treated to opulent gardens, elegant mansions, and streets lined
from end to end with old growth shade trees. There isn't much in the way of parks
for you to enjoy, but there is the Graceland West cemetery which covers
a vast section of the area and has numerous
trails running throughout. You can even take
the paths to the east side of the cemetery where you will find Challenger Park
and the Challenger Dog-Friendly Area. This is a large fenced in area where you can let your pup run around without being tied to a leash. It's a great way to
socialize them with other dogs and people.
While not a huge park, it does have
a dog watering station and plenty of room for your pup and their friends to chase each
other around in. There are dog waste bags
available and a receptacle to put them in.
