Wag! Walkers know Deens Orangeland
Currently, Deens Orangeland is a swath of forest to the west
of the Spruce Creek Airport and its surrounding communities. The woods sit
along Taylor Road and will eventually be developed.
For those who live in the areas that have already been under construction, the area
offers a tranquil rural setting and an oasis to get away from the hustle and bustle
of everyday life.
The only real noise you have
to deal with is that which is generated by the airport, but most of the planes
flying in and out are smaller private craft and don't make a lot of noise.
The one person who did have a 707 parked in his driveway was John Travolta, but
he no longer lives here!
Three minutes to the east on Taylor Road is the intersection of
I-95 and Dunlawton Avenue. Here, you will find grocery stores, places to buy pet
supplies, hardware stores, and a good selection of restaurants to
choose from.
What is the terrain like in Deens Orangeland?
The terrain out here is undeveloped and covered with dense
forest. But for those who live in the surrounding communities, Taylor Road tends
to be bustling most of the day, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
Luckily, even that traffic is limited due to the lack of dense population. This being said,
you still need to keep a close eye on oncoming vehicles since they aren't going to be watching for you!
Most of the communities have paved roads, but no sidewalks
for you and your dog to make use of. If
you choose to take your walks along Taylor Road, you will be walking on the grass
berms because, just like the neighborhoods, no one has added any sidewalks. If your
dog is not used to walking near a busy
highway, you should use a short leash as it will give you more control in case your pooch gets excited.
How many greenways are there in Deens Orangeland?
The area is surrounded by
woods with plenty of trails for you and your pup to hike on. But if you prefer
something a little more "back to nature,"
then you can take your dog for a drive out to the Tiger Bay State Forest on US-92.
The forest is part of the Tiger Bay Wildlife Management Area that covers a
massive 30,000 acres. It offers both of you miles of trails to hike along and hundreds
of animals to look for on your hikes.
Alternatively, you head east to the beach. It's less than twenty
minutes away on Dunlawton and offers the two of you miles of sand to hike
on and all the fresh air and sunshine you can handle. Use the soft sand to work
leg muscles and build stamina, swim in the water to cool off, and then
stroll back on the wet sand while you search for seashells or simply enjoy each other's company.
