Wag! Walkers know Barley Heights
Barley Heights is a small
family-oriented residential neighborhood located on Lafayette Avenue. To the west
of you are the FEC railroad tracks with a small area of woods being the only
buffer. As tempting as it might be, neither you nor your dog should walk along the
tracks as it can present a few hazards.
Living here may mean having to deal with a lot of traffic
and train noise, but at the same time, it
puts you with ten minutes of the central shopping district that runs on both sides
of Dunlawton Avenue. From small boutiques in strip malls to big box stores like
Walmart and Big Lots, you can find them all on Dunlawton. You can also find grocery
stores and pet supply stores here to keep your pup happily stocked up on their
favorite foods and treats.
You are within a few minutes' drive of the beach, several parks and forests, and nature preserves
in the area as well.
What is the terrain like in Barley Heights?
Within Barley Heights,
you aren't likely to see much in the way of traffic, but with a large mobile home community directly to the south, the
traffic flowing onto and off of South Ridgewood Drive during rush hours does create a
lot of traffic in the area. Lafayette Avenue is a bustling
road on Sundays due to the Church of the Epiphany immediately to the north.
Once traffic has settled down, you can take your pup for walks
within the confines of the mobile home
park to the south. There are several blocks in the park for you and your
dog to use for walking. Keep in mind that there are many families with children living
here. You and your dog are likely to encounter lots of them on your walks
unless you go out very early in the morning. Keeping your dog on a short leash as it is the best way to keep everyone safe!
How many greenways are there in Barley Heights?
There is a small area of woods on the western end of the Barley
Heights neighborhood where you and your dog can romp around. Once again, stay away from the tracks as the area on both
sides of them are private property and the
trains pose a safety risk.
Thankfully, you are only
a five-minute drive from Buschmann Park and the Margaret Buschman Parcel.
Combined, these areas offer a lake with a walking trail and a fishing pier. The pier
also has a pavilion for public use. There are nature
trails for you and your dog to explore and exercise
equipment to "pump you up!"
One of the cool things about living in the Port Orange area is that you can pile the whole family into
the car, drive out onto the beach, park, and have a picnic! Then you and your
dog can take off for a long walk, logging as many
miles as you feel hiking along the sand.
