Wag! Walkers know Wallaces New Smyrna
Wallaces New Smyrna is a pocket of single-family homes and the
United Church of Christ on the corner of Washington Street and North Orange Street. Washington
Street turns into the North Causeway that leads over to the peninsula. From
your home here, you can be on the beach in less than ten minutes and hitting
the waves or taking your dog for long walks in the fresh air and sunshine!
Living here puts you close to places to eat, bars, grocery stores, and pet supply stores on both sides of the Indian
River North. It also puts you within walking distance of at least two public
parks and one long grass walkway. If you feel energetic and your dog is up to
it, you can actually walk across the North Causeway as there is a protected walkway
on one side wherever it crosses the water. It's a little over
2 miles to the beach, but it's great exercise!
What is the terrain like in Wallaces New Smyrna?
"Urban" would be an excellent
way to describe the terrain here in Wallaces
New Smyrna as it is a blend of residential, retail, and commercial. Some of the surrounding
areas have sidewalks for the two of you, but the
others leave you no choice but to walk on the roads. Being this close to US-1
and on North Orange Street means living in an
area of town that is bustling from early in the morning until quite late at
night.
Thankfully, there are places nearby for both of you to walk
where the traffic is a little less or where you
are at least protected from it. Rush
hours and when the school buses are running are especially hectic and not the
best time to take your pooch out for walks. However, if you must, your best bet
is to take them to a grassy riverside walk where you will be safe and the view out over the river is spectacular.
How many greenways are there in Wallaces New Smyrna?
The grass walkway along the river is an excellent place for
you and your dog to go for walks together. This walkway runs from Riverside
Park to the south and all the way north along the river to Wayne Avenue. It's a great
place to take your daily walks in the early morning while no one else is
around.
On the corner of Washington Street and North Riverside Drive is the mysterious
Old Fort Park. The park offers plenty of grass to run around on, shade trees to
relax under, and one big mystery. No one knows the history of the fort that once
stood here!
To the north is the Doris Leeper Spruce
Creek Preserve. This nature preserve covers over 1,600 acres. There are swamps, marshes, and acre upon
acre of dense forest filled with trails. You can hike the three miles to Rose Bay and back if
the two of you are up to the challenge!
