Wag! Walkers know Spyglass
This small cul-de-sac community of single-family homes sits
on the east bank of the Indian River North and is only two blocks from the
beach. Talk about having the best of both worlds! Those homes directly on the riverbank
have private docks for tying up their boats or fishing off of. As one of the northernmost
communities on the peninsula, the atmosphere is tranquil and relaxed.
The trade-off for living this far north is not having stores
or restaurants within walking distance. Having said this, North Peninsula Drive will
take you to great places to eat, shop, and party in less than ten minutes, even
on a busy day. At the same time, Smyrna Dunes Park is a five-minute drive to
the north and the beach is a five-minute walk to the east. If this is the
trade-off for peace, quiet, and virtually endless sunshine, it's a great trade!
What is the terrain like in Spyglass?
One of the great things about living in a cul-de-sac,
especially one this far north, is the distinct lack of heavy traffic. That's
not to say you won't still see a fair amount on North Peninsula Drive thanks to the last
of the condos to the north and the park at the tip of the peninsula. Inside the
cul-de-sac, daily traffic is very limited, making it a safe place to use the
sidewalks for your walks.
The sidewalks continue out on North Peninsula and can be used to
take you and your dog all the way to the Smyrna Dunes Park. On top of this, you
can follow the sidewalks as far south on North Peninsula Drive as the two of you can
handle. If you follow it far enough, you end up on historic Flagler Avenue where there
are several boutiques and shops to check out.
How many greenways are there in Spyglass?
The nearest green space is the beach, covering more
miles to the south from the Ponce Inlet than the average person can walk in one day
as it goes all the way to Port Canaveral. The beach offers you and your dog a
choice of terrain to hike in. The soft, dry sand is perfect for giving your
legs a fantastic workout. But keep in mind that you do have to be able to walk back to your starting point! The good news is that you can walk back on the wet sand which
is much easier to walk on and when you get too hot, you can always take a dip in the waves.
To the north is Smyrna Dunes Park with 73 acres
dedicated to multiple ecosystems with trails, a 1.5-mile boardwalk, and a dog-friendly
beach for the two or you to play on and go for a swim in the warm waters of the
inlet.
