Wag! Walkers know Sheldons New Smyrna
Sheldons New Smyrna is
a modest residential area to the west of US-1, filled with single-family homes
set in shady yards, making the perfect environment to raise a family and enjoy having
a family dog. Despite being close to the highway, the neighborhood has a distinctly
rural feel to it. There are several small community parks in the area for you and
your pup to play in.
Along the highway, especially as you get closer to the central
part of town, is where you will find plenty of tasty places to eat, grocery
stores, pet supply stores, and just about anything you and your family are likely
to need.
There are several green spaces for you and your pooch to check
out on both sides of the Indian River North, including the Spruce Creek Preserve
and the miles of fabulous beach along the Atlantic. You'll also find the Tiger Bay Wildlife
Management Area that covers over 30,000 acres of Florida
forests.
What is the terrain like in Sheldons New Smyrna?
Sheldons is essentially a residential community, meaning you
shouldn't expect to see much in the way of industrial traffic, but you can expect to see a lot of commuter traffic during
rush hours. The one thing missing from this picturesque family-friendly neighborhood
seems to be anything that resembles sidewalks for you and your pup to go
walking on.
The roads are heavily shaded
which might be great for the two of you when the sun is at its zenith. But
dappled shade and light can make it very hard for motorists to see you. Take
extra precautions such as wearing light-colored clothing and restricting your walks
to the quietest parts of the day which may help make things safer.
The ground in the area is
quite flat and unexciting, but by adding in plenty of distance, you and your
pup can still get the exercise you need to stay healthy.
How many greenways are there in Sheldons New Smyrna?
There are a few small neighborhood parks nearby, but none within the bounds of Sheldons. If you take US-1 north for a few miles, you should come to several places to park and enter the 1,637 acres that make up the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Park. This massive nature preserve covers swamplands and dense forests. Inside, you and your dog can hike along miles of trails that run all the way to Rose Bay.
A short drive to the west on SR-44 will take the two of you to the twin Otter Parks, North, and South. These side-by-side parks are covered with dense forests and are split by the New Smyrna Beach Multi-Use Trail. This trail is paved and open to hikers, cyclists, and dog walkers. There is plenty of grass on either side of the pathway for your pooch to walk along and it's a beautiful hike to enjoy with your four-legged friend.
