Wag! Walkers know Orlando Beach
Orlando Beach is one of the last residential communities to
the north on the peninsula. While this is an
excellent place to live if you like the beach and a little peace and quiet, if you need to shop, go out to eat,
need pet supplies, or anything else, plan on a drive. The only
thing close is the Smyrna Dunes Park at the very northern tip of the peninsula.
The homes here are all single-family houses with those
sitting on the Indian River being quite
large and expensive. Unlike many areas of the beachside, the homes on the coast are not condos. One thing that is very different on this
end of the area is that you must hike through a narrow swath of scrub before
you get to the beach itself. Be aware that motorized vehicles are allowed on
this end of the sand, meaning you need to be very careful not to get run over while out walking.
What is the terrain like in Orlando Beach?
Being so far north from the center of town, you aren't likely
to have much traffic to deal with on most days. However, do keep in mind that the
park does attract a fair amount of traffic, especially on the weekends. The ground
itself is, for the most part, flat and unexciting and within the residential area, you aren't likely to encounter much in
the way of pedestrian traffic beyond a few people walking their dogs.
The one problem you will have to deal with is a lack of sidewalks for you and your
dog to walk on. This means you and your
dog need to be extra-careful, despite the lack of heavy traffic. The beach makes a much better choice when comparing it to the rigorous and possibly hazardous pavement, not only for your dog's paws, but also for your joints. Plus, it's a lot more fun
to walk!
How many greenways are there in Orlando Beach?
If we are talking about green spaces, then we need to start
with the beach running for miles upon miles from Ponce Inlet and uninterrupted past
Canaveral Air Force Station. It is the perfect place
for you and your dog to go walking, jogging, running, or to simply go for a swim out in the water. You can
use the soft sand to put your leg muscles to the test and the wet sand to let
your muscles cool down after your walk.
Smyrna Dunes Park offers you the opportunity to enjoy five different
ecological systems including beachfront, riverbanks, scrub zone, dunes, and saltwater marsh. This is an excellent place to see numerous birds,
reptiles, and many other animals living in their natural habitat. The park is
dog-friendly, but you must keep them on a leash unless you are using the beach
to take them swimming.
