Wag! Walkers know North Causeway
North Causeway is an island in the middle of the Indian
River North containing a blend of condominiums and expensive single-family
homes. Those homes and condos on the waterfront have private docks for those who
like to make the most of living on the river.
Having a home here
puts you in the envious position of being equally close to the beach and the center
of town. Whether you're looking for somewhere to eat, a pet supply
store, or a place to buy a custom surfboard,
all are within a ten-minute drive, no matter which end of the island you live on.
One beautiful thing about living on an island in the middle of
the Indian River North is the frequent
opportunity to watch dolphins at play. You
are also on the doorsteps of the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Park where there are miles
of trails to hike and plenty of shade to help keep you and your dog cooled down.
What is the terrain like in North Causeway?
While flat, the terrain
here has a distinctly man-made feel to
it for a good reason. Much, if not all of the island, has been built to accommodate
the causeway and the many homes and business that have subsequently been built here.
While mostly given over to houses and condos, there are several businesses including
a bowling alley, a couple of restaurants, and the boat ramp.
Vehicular traffic tends to be bustling during the daytime,
especially during rush hours and peak tourism season. However, the residential
areas are much quieter, making them safe to go for walks with your dog. Sidewalks
are hit and miss, so most of your walking will
be done on the roads.
If you and your dog are up for long walks, there is a path you can take back over to Old Fort Park. Or you can head to the beach where you can go for walks in the sand or play in
the water.
How many greenways are there in North Causeway?
The island has one small park at the eastern end. Buena Vista
Park has a walking trail, plenty of grass, and a fishing pier. There are large strips
of grass between the causeway and the other main roads on the island. Each has
a walking trail you can use to add more distance to your walks.
The Spruce Creek Preserve is your next-door neighbor, but
you might have to drive for five minutes or so to find one of several different
entrances. The park offers over 1,600 acres of swamps, forests, and wetlands to
hike through on miles of trails.
You can also head over to the beach and make use of the soft
sand for the tough part of your workout and then walk on the wet sand and in the water on the way back. Be sure to take a few minutes to play in
the surf with your dog if the weather is hot enough!
