Wag! Walkers know Longstreet Walker Grant
Longstreet Walker Grant is a tiny pocket of single-family houses
along Florida Avenue between the Indian River to the west and the Atlantic Ocean
to the east. This is an idyllic place to
live as it puts you within walking distance of several outstanding restaurants,
a few bars, shopping, and the beach.
However, if you are looking for a dog park where your pooch can run around off-leash, the New Smyrna Dog Park on the mainland
side is your only option. At the north end of the beach is Ponce Inlet where there is an on-leash park instead.
One of the best things about living here with your dog is that
you should be able to take them out for walks on just about any day of the year. Even the winters are mild with temperatures
hovering in the 60s and 70s all winter long, perfect for taking your dog out for their daily stroll.
What is the terrain like in Longstreet Walker Grant?
Longstreet Walker Grant is just far enough from Flagler Avenue to be away from the bulk of the traffic heading to and from the beach. While you
might not see a lot of vehicular traffic, you can expect to see a fair amount of
pedestrian traffic during the day as people walk to and from the beach.
You should be ready to walk on the streets here as there is
a distinct lack of sidewalks. The streets are heavily shaded in some areas, so wearing
light-colored clothing is a good idea during the darker hours, when necessary. If you must walk your pup early in the morning or at dusk when
the lighting is not good, you might consider one of the various LED leashes available.
They are very bright and make it much easier for drivers to see both of you and
avoid running you over.
How many greenways are there in Longstreet Walker Grant?
The neighborhood itself is quite shady and green, but as for parks or anywhere else to take your dog,
there isn't much around beyond the beach. However, the coastal sands make an excellent
place for the two of you to get in your daily walks and, at the same time, spend
a little time together playing in the ocean to cool off on those superheated summer
days when temperatures are in the 90s with humidity levels to match.
If you would like to take your dog walking in the shade, then
you might consider going to the Spruce Creek Preserve. Covering 1,600 acres, taking the hiking trails through here will expose
you to marshes, forest, an observation tower, and over 3 miles of walking trails
that take you from your home all the way to Rose Bay and back if you are ambitious
enough to hike the full 6-mile round trip.
