Wag! Walkers know Longstreet
Longstreet is a small neighborhood consisting of mostly homes on the north side of Flagler Avenue, right by where the North Causeway comes
across from the mainland. There are many advantages to living on this side of the
Indian River starting with being close enough to the beach to walk to it every
day.
At the same time, you are close to several excellent places to eat,
lots of shops to buy souvenirs, and a major grocery store
where you can shop to buy dog food.
Living here also puts you right on the east bank of the Indian
River North which, when combined with the breezes coming in off the ocean, help
to keep you a little cooler during the heat of the summer months where the
temperatures can reach the high 90s on most days. When temperatures reach this
point, you should be taking your dog out for their daily walks early in the
morning before the area starts heating up.
What is the terrain like in Longstreet?
Living at the beachside end of the causeway guarantees that you will
be dealing with a fair amount of vehicular traffic and having a hotel at your doorstep
isn't going to help make things any quieter. In
fact, living here puts you in a fairly
busy part of town.
Keep in mind that just because the main road is busy, this
is not a good reason not to go out for walks. Instead, it acts as a
reminder that you need to pay close attention to traffic, especially as sidewalks
are, for the most part, non-existent in the area. Watch for traffic and try to get
out in the early morning hours for your walks. As long as you stay away from
the main road, you shouldn't have as much to deal with. There are plenty of residential streets to
walk on that are much quieter and a lot safer to use.
How many greenways are there in Longstreet?
Living on the beachside of New Smyrna Beach
offers you and your dog access to miles of sand and surf less than a ten-minute
walk to the east. The beach is a fabulous green space with soft sand for extreme
exercise and hard-packed wet sand that is perfect for walking on while your dog
plays in the water.
This is one of the few
beaches in the area where you and your dog are welcome along with tourists and
cars. Anytime you choose to go for walks here, your dog needs to be
on a leash. You can bet that the
tourists behind the wheel may not be as familiar with the area as you are, so exercise appropriate caution.
The best part of the beach is that you can walk
your dog here all year round as even the winter months here tend to be quite
warm!
