Wag! Walkers know Inlet Shores
Inlet Shores is an island community jutting out into Ponce
Inlet. There are very few of the homes on the outside edge
of the community that do not have a fishing dock and a place to tie
up their boat. Those in the center of the community,
unfortunately, don’t enjoy the same luxury. There is a tiny park on the island
that has a playground for the "littles"
and a small area of grass.
Living here might put you right at the inlet, but at the same
time, it also puts you directly east of the
New Smyrna Beach Airport so you will have to deal with a small amount of air
traffic flying directly over your home. It also means that if you want to eat
out, you have no choice but to hop in the car. The same applies to grocery stores,
pet stores, and the beach which is a fifteen to twenty-minute drive
to the east.
What is the terrain like in Inlet Shores?
Living out on a virtual island with only a single road in or
out of the community does have its advantages. Vehicular traffic out here is limited
to those who live here and service vehicles like the mail carrier and school
buses. The only exceptions to this rule are morning and evening rush hours. The
easy way to avoid the problem is not to take
your dog for a walk during these times. When there are lots of kids
around, be sure you keep your dog on a short leash to eliminate any behavioral
issues.
The land here is flat which really doesn't present
much of a challenge for your walks. Along with this, you are dealing with a community
in which only one small neighborhood has sidewalks. This
means that extra care should be taken to keep an eye out for cars as you are more
likely to see them than they are you.
How many greenways are there in Inlet Shores?
Living here puts you on the edge of the Spruce Creek
Preserve, a 1,600-acre nature preserve of swamps and forests. The preserve also
offers the one thing you and your dog need more than anything else: Miles of
trails for the two of you to explore daily. The trails run all the
way to Rose Bay, a hike of three miles one way. Keep working at it and, before long, the two of you will be hiking
the six-mile round trip on a regular basis.
A fifteen to twenty-minute drive will take you and your dog
out to the beach. If you head out early in the morning, you will find it to be far less crowded and the cool breezes plentiful. Plus, if you wait until later in the day, you will find yourselves
sharing the beach with motor vehicles, sunbathers, surfers, kids, and many others,
making it much harder for either of you to enjoy your walk.
