Wag! Walkers know Indian River Plantation
Indian River Plantation is a large neighborhood of modest
single-family homes sitting next to the New Smyrna Beach Golf Course. The
course is open to the public, but not to your dog, as dogs are not permitted on the course. The community is far
enough back from the North Dixie Freeway and close enough for commuting, yet far away
enough to not drown you in noise all night long.
The one thing missing here is amenities, but all along A1A, there are numerous restaurants for you to
try. Some are chain fast-food, while others are family restaurants. There are several
parks and preserves nearby where you and your dog can go for walks or paddle away
in a canoe. You'll want to remember the beach as well which is no more than ten minutes to the east.
From groceries to pet supplies, everything you need can be found with just a little bit of travel.
What is the terrain like in Indian River Plantation?
Although Indian River Plantation is not a gated community, with
only two ways in or out, the only traffic you are likely to see on your walks will
be if you choose to go walking with your pup during rush hours. Keep in mind that there tends to be a lot of traffic during school hours. More importantly,
there may be a lot of kids getting on and off the buses!
From a walking point of view, the flat ground here is not
very interesting and doesn't have a lot to offer in terms of challenges. But walking around the
community doesn't have to be interesting
or challenging, as there are plenty of places to find challenging walks if you know where to look!
If there is
one thing missing in the neighborhood, it would have to be shade trees lining
the sidewalks to protect you and your dog from the blazing summer sun.
How many greenways are there in Indian River Plantation?
If parks and hiking trails are your thing, there are plenty around here for you and your dog to explore.
To the west are Otter Parks North and South where the two of you can hike through
the woods on several different trails. The
parks are split in half by the New Smyrna Beach Multi-Use Trail that runs from
I-95 to the west. It's a great place
to take your pup for a stroll along a trail lined on both sides with trees.
To the east is the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve. The
preserve covers 1,637 acres of swamps, hammocks, and forests lined with
pathways and trails for you and your pooch to hike along. You can hike the three miles to Rose Bay, but remember
that you have to hike back, so make sure both of you are up for the distance. Of course, you can always turn back at any point along the trail.
