Wag! Walkers know Horton Shores
Horton Shores incorporates a large
residential community consisting of single-family homes with a few small condos
and businesses thrown in. The neighborhood sits along S Atlantic Avenue from Oakwood to Maple Street.
While your home may not be on the beach, there isn't a home in the
neighborhood from which you can't walk to it in less than ten minutes.
Living here puts you midway between historic Flagler Avenue to the north and E 3rd Avenue to the south. Both of
these areas offer shopping, great places to eat, and the best bars in town. In fact, unless you
work on the mainland side, you could live here without ever having to cross
the bridge.
There are plenty of places to go for walks with your dog, including
parks, the beach, and through the various residential areas if you prefer
to walk on paved surfaces. The sidewalks and streets also make a better place
to walk when it's raining.
What is the terrain like in Horton Shores?
You might think living on the beachside part of town would mean
nothing but bustling streets filled with cars and people. To a certain extent, this is true, especially during peak
seasons. But once you get off S Atlantic Avenue, the residential streets tend to be
relatively quiet except for during rush hours.
Thankfully, most of the streets in the community have sidewalks
for you and your dog to walk along, keeping you out of the roads. Keep in mind that this is a family neighborhood, so you should expect some pedestrian traffic,
especially kids and school buses. But as long as you keep your dog on a short leash, this should not be a problem.
Of course,
there is also the beach on the other side of S Atlantic Avenue where you and your pooch can walk for miles in the sand enjoying the warm summer sun and the fresh ocean
breezes.
How many greenways are there in Horton Shores?
The nearest and biggest green space is, of course, the beach! This space offers
the two of you miles of soft dry sand to walk through that is sure to build your
leg muscles. It is also home to the wet sand that is much easier to contend with. At the same time, you can take time out for a
swim on those really hot summer days.
A few minutes to the north is Smyrna Dunes Park at the tip
of the peninsula. This is one of the few
dog-friendly parks in Volusia County. It is also home to five separate ecosystems,
a 1.5-mile long elevated boardwalk, and a
dog-friendly beach where you and your dog can go for a swim.
Halfway between is the Grayce K. Barch North Beach Community Park
where you will find trails to walk on and one of the few Volusia County fire
pit zones. Spend the afternoon hiking the trails and then enjoy a nice bonfire
on the beach!
