Wag! Walkers know Hillmans
Living in Hillmans
puts you right next door to the mysterious Old Fort Park on the west bank of the Indian River North. What's so strange about the park after all? If you visit
the park, you will see the reason. Along
with the grass and trees, the ruins of an old fort can still be seen. The mystery is that no one knows why or when the fort was built!
The North Causeway is on your doorstep that takes you all
the way over to the beach and the waterfront. However, you should know that
this is a bustling road during the day. There
are several restaurants nearby along with access to just about anything you,
your family, or your dog could possibly
need. There are several parks and preserves in the area for everyone to go
hiking in that make great places to take your dog for walks where there is
grass to walk on.
What is the terrain like in Hillmans?
Hillmans sits on the
corner of the North Causeway and North Riverside Drive which is a bustling intersection. The causeway is one of
only two bridges over to the beachside peninsula, so you can expect traffic to
be bustling from early in the morning until late at night. The causeway also tends
to bring more traffic to the area, as do the number of people living on North Causeway Island. Morning and evening rush hours also add significantly to the traffic
congestion, so walking your dog during these times may be inadvisable.
Fortunately, there are plenty of residential blocks the two
of you can take where the amount of traffic you have to deal with is significantly
less. The best part is that there are sidewalks on most blocks with plenty of
shade trees for the two of you to build into your daily walks, making your walks safer and cooler
when the Florida sun is beaming down.
How many greenways are there in Hillmans?
There is, of course, Old Fort Park next door where there is
plenty of room for you and your dog to walk and play. If you cross over North Riverside Drive, there is a wide berm of
grass running from Riverside Park all the way north to Wayne Avenue. You can use
the berm for long walks and take it down to the park where there are walking paths,
public docking, and a children's playground.
A five-minute drive
over the causeway puts you on East 3rd Avenue which takes you all the way out onto
the beach. Yes, here in New Smyrna Beach you can drive on the sandy dunes themselves! The beach
has soft sand for serious exercise and wet sand for a gentler walk. But keep in mind that you are not the only one who
is going to be in the area. Everyone else will be too! Be sure to take extra care or go early before it
gets busy.
