Wag! Walkers know Channel View
Channel
View is a small neighborhood on the northern end of the beachside peninsula facing
the Indian River North and situated close to Smyrna Dunes Park. Living this far north means living with the fact that you will have to drive to the amenities you are most
likely to need. This includes things like
grocery stores, bars, gas stations, places to buy pet supplies, and fabulous restaurants to eat in.
However,
by living this far to the north, you gain the advantage of being
away from the hustle and bustle of the central part of the city. To the east, you also have miles of beach to play and hike on, the west is the Indian River that
flows down the coast of Florida under several names, also nearby is the Ponce Inlet that takes
you right out into the Atlantic if you have an sea-worthy boat. If surfing
is your thing, then you will love the waves as they are among the best in
the state.
What is the terrain like in Channel View?
One
reason for living this far north on the peninsula is the relative lack of traffic
on any given day. There will be some traffic to the condos and homes along
with Smyrna Dunes Park, but in comparison to many other areas of the beachside
part of town, the traffic, even during
rush hours, is relatively small. North Peninsula Avenue is the one busy street as
it leads all the way to the park and, if you go south, all the way back into
town.
You
might also encounter a fair amount of pedestrian traffic as those who live
here head to the beach to go swimming, surfing, walking the dog, or simply kick back on the sand and catch a few rays.
Unlike most of the beach in New Smyrna, you and
your pup will have to walk through a wide
band of scrub zone before you actually reach the sand and water.
How many greenways are there in Channel View?
There
are two large green spaces in the nearby vicinity. The first is, of course, the beach running uninterrupted from
the tip of the peninsula all the way down to Port Canaveral. The dry, soft sand
near the scrub tends to be hard to walk in. It grabs at feet and paws, making
both of you work for each step you take. What a fantastic way to build stamina
and leg muscles! On the way back, use the wet, firm sand at the water's edge for
a nice relaxing stroll back to your starting
point.
At
the very tip of the peninsula is Smyrna Dunes Park. This 73 acres of parkland is home to five separate ecosystems including the ocean, the beach, riverfront, scrub zone, and saltwater
marsh. Along with this, there is a
1.5-mile-long boardwalk to cross the sensitive dunes and
hit the dog-friendly beach at the other end.
