Wag! Walkers know West Miami (West)
While West Miami might be considered an subsection of Miami, it is also
a city in its own right. The town had a very unusual beginning, founded by a number of businessmen from Dade County who, in 1947, were trying to
ban gambling and cut back on cocktail hours. To avoid this, the men pooled
together, bought the land, and started their own city. Today, the city offers a
family-friendly atmosphere with recently replaced sidewalks for you and Fido to enjoy. There are several tasty places to find mojitos and peccadillo,
dog parks within driving distance, and pet supply stores nearby for when you
need more food for your pup.
The climate is marvelous with lows in the 60s
during the winter months. You can walk Fido in shorts and a t-shirt in
January! Summers tend to be in the high 80s or low 90s, making for glorious days
and cool fun nights taking in the nightlife.
What is the terrain like in West Miami (West)?
The terrain here is pretty flat with large neighborhoods consisting of single-family homes, multi-family housing units, and a small
mobile home park in the northern section of town. Depending on where you live,
there are sidewalks to walk on with grass berms to keep paws cool. The big thing with flat ground is trying to find ways to make your strolls
more exciting and challenging for both you and your pup.
Keep in mind that your dog, just like you, can become bored with going the same way every day. In fact, they may even act like they don't want to go anymore after your one-hundredth trip
around the same two or three blocks. Why not go different directions every time
you set out? It's not that hard to vary your routes to keep them interested
when you consider the number of residential blocks in the community for you to
choose from each day.
How many greenways are there in West Miami (West)?
The only green space within the community is Cooper Park
with playgrounds, trails, and large areas of grass for the two of you to enjoy playing on. Beyond this, if you want a dog-friendly park that has enough
room and has trails for the two of you to
get in some serious walk time, you have to drive to them.
One of the nearest is
the AD Doug Barnes Park in Coral Terrace. This is a 65-acre park with camping
for organizations and groups, a pool, plenty of grills scattered throughout the
park, and plenty of grass to play on. There are several different ways you can
take the trails around the park and the lake to ensure you get in plenty of
exercise. One of the best things about this park, of course, is that it is
absolutely free and there is a nature center with programs for kids 6 to 16
years of age.
