Wag! Walkers know South River Drive (South River Drive Historic District)
The South River Historic District is home to a number of
houses and buildings built at the turn of the 20th Century. Of these, six were
built before 1915 and are the sole surviving Frame Vernacular style homes. The
entire district was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
The area is a blend of single-family homes and multifamily apartment buildings
and condos. Packed with living spaces, the district thankfully offers sidewalks in most of the neighborhood. There are a
few restaurants worth trying, but if you want a pet store, you should plan to
drive for a bit.
The weather here is fantastic with winters never going lower
than the 60s. Summers are even better with highs in the high 80s and seemingly
endless sunshine. There are very few days, if any, that you can't
enjoy going for a nice stroll around the community.
What is the terrain like in South River Drive (South River Drive Historic District)?
The terrain here is mostly artificial with the exception of
a few yards. This might not be the best terrain for a highly active breed of
dog, but for those who could stand to lose a few pounds, the flat
ground can be a blessing. You can start working on getting rid of those extra
pounds by going for short walks to the end of the block and back. As both of
you get used to walking, you can always add more distance one block at a time.
One thing to keep in mind is that during the summer months, the sidewalk and pavement
temperatures can reach approximately 135 to 145°F. If you can fry an egg at
120°F, imagine what 145°F can do to the pads on your pup's paws. Making them walk
across a surface this hot can lead to severe damage in minutes, so you'll want to prepare for these conditions.
How many greenways are there in South River Drive (South River Drive Historic District)?
This district is heavily built-up, leaving little room for
greenery. There are a few empty lots, but they are private property. The only park within the neighborhood is the Jose Marti
Park. While this park is relatively small, it does have a large area of grass
and a trail that runs through it and along the waterway. You and your pooch are
welcome to use the park, providing you keep them on a leash.
Alternatively, you can jump in the car with the rest of your
family, cruise out onto the Rickenbacker Causeway, and over to the Hobie Island Beach Park
where there is an off-leash dog park. Your pup can run around making new
friends and meeting up with old ones! There is even a dog beach for them to play on or hit the waves as you please. Otherwise, kick back and watch the
windsurfers catching the waves and the winds.
