Wag! Walkers know Totem Park
Totem Park is a vast area of residences and businesses running
along the east side of US-1/S Ridgewood Ave between W Turgot Ave and W Marion Ave.
The shops line the side of the highway, and the rest of the area is residential
with large luxury homes on the river. The residential areas have plenty of
shade trees and modest yards with plenty of room for the kids and family dog to
run around in.
Most of the businesses along the highway here are individually
owned including a tire store, a barbershop, and an E-Cig store. However, there
are several local restaurants here that you and your family should try. When
you need people or dog food, the Florida Shores Plaza five minutes south on
US-1/S Ridgewood Ave. Here you will find a Winn-Dixie supermarket where you
should be able to find everything you need along with more places to take your
family out for a meal.
What is the terrain like in Totem Park?
Like most of this part of Central Florida, the terrain here
is flat and unexciting. The only way to ensure you and your pooch get enough exercise
is to substitute distance for hills. Being sandwiched between US-1/S Ridgewood
Ave and S Riverside drive. This is a working family community, so you and your
pooch should expect to encounter lots of traffic during the morning and evening
rush hours. Traffic only gets worse when the school buses are running around
picking up kids for school or dropping them off.
Both S Ridgewood and S Riverside have sidewalks running
alongside them, but unless your dog is very comfortable walking alongside a highway
filled with heavy traffic, you might want to avoid US-1/S Ridgewood Ave. From early
morning until well into the night the traffic on the highway never seems to
slow down. A much better and quieter choice would be to take your dog walking on
the sidewalk running along the east side of S Riverside Dr.
How many greenways are there in Totem Park?
If you live in Totem Park, you have only to cross over to
the west side of US-1/S Ridgewood Ave to Hawks Park. Hawks Park is home to
Edgewater Parks & Recreation, two lakes, walking paths, a playground, and
plenty of grass for the two of you to run around on. Be sure you keep your dog on
a short leash and carry plenty of poop bags for those landmines they tend to drop
in the most inconvenient places.
In the park is a trail running west through a small area of
woods to the Southeast Volusia Family YMCA. The Y is home to a swimming pool, indoor
recreation facilities, and best of all multiple sports fields covering vast
areas of grass. You and your dog should have no problem finding room to run
around. However, again, be sure you keep your dog on a leash and clean up after
them. No one wants to be playing soccer and step in a pile of dog poop.
