District consists mostly of the airport itself, the Deland Industrial Park, and support
buildings. There aren't any homes in this area, but there are plenty of places
to take a dog for walks and there
are nearby housing estates. There doesn't have to be a residential area
to need to know where to walk your dog!
Whether you work here or live nearby, the Airport District is
close to the center of town where you will find most of the shopping amenities, including
a Walmart Supercenter and a Publix Supermarket. Central Deland is also home to a number of small local stores and a great selection
of restaurants for you and your family to try out.
There are some trails for you and your dog to walk on if you
follow the power lines past the substation. In
fact, you can use the wide-open space under the lines for your walks!
What is the terrain like in Airport District?
The Airport District is a mixture of paved parking lots, an industrial
park, and the many support buildings sitting nearby. If you plan to take your dog out for a walk here, you will need to use a short leash. The traffic during day stays bustling, filled with passing tractor trailers, delivery trucks, visitors to the Naval Air
Museum, and people going to and from the airport. With no sidewalks for the two of you to
walk on, extra care is needed at all
times.
There is plenty of grass in the area for the two of you to
use, but stay out of the grass surrounding the runways and taxiways. These areas
are restricted space and you could end
up in a lot of trouble out in those spaces! If you can, try to find
times of day when traffic is at its lowest to help make your walks a little

There is a lot of green space around any airport and Deland Airport is no different. Like all airports, the grass around the taxiways and
runways is off limits, but there is plenty of grass
in the industrial park and along the north side of East International Speedway Boulevard.
On the south side of this roadway is an FPL substation with a wide swath
cut through the woods for the high-tension power lines. You and your dog can use
this green space for hikes or cut off through the woods to the east to Lake
Talmadge.
On the other hand, to
the east is the Tiger Bay State Forest, the Tiger Bay Wildlife Management
Area, and the Clark Bay Conservation Area. These areas cover more than 35,000 acres
of woods, lakes, and mesic flatwoods. You and your dog can
spend hours hiking the many trails running through these areas!
