Wag! Walkers know MarylaHeights
Maryland Heights is a small mixed neighborhood of businesses
and single-family homes located on International Speedway Blvd. and next to Daytona
State College. It is
across the road from Tuscawilla Park and within
driving distance of the World's Most Famous Beach and some of the finest
seafood restaurants in the county.
But, unlike many areas of Daytona, you are
only a walk across from Tuscawilla where there is
room to let your pup enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. Dog-friendly parks are available
within easy driving distance and you are
only a short drive from the many shops at Volusia Mall.
A convenient location
is only part of living here. It's the weather that so many people come here for. Picture this: in January, you won't need
much more than a jacket and pants to take a walk as the temperatures
hang out in the upper 40s before February brings the start of the spring
warming trend.
What is the terrain like in MarylaHeights?
The changes in
elevation here with the exception of the bridges varies so little that you might not even notice it. While there really isn't much in the way of a challenge when it comes to taking your daily walks, you have to learn to work with what you have.
Like you, your pup likes a little variety in their walks. Try
going different directions each time you go for a stroll. There are plenty of
different blocks to walk around. If you mix them up, it can seem like a different
walk each day!
One thing everyone with a dog needs to know about walking in the summer months is that once the temperature outside hits the 70s and the
sun is shining down, the temperature of the pavement will be more than 120°F. This can definitely cause discomfort and some burns, so exercise caution when heading out for walks during these days.
How many greenways are there in MarylaHeights?
The nearest green space is Tuscawilla Park. When the park
was first built in 1993, it was nothing
more than a disc golf course with 65 different pin locations. Today, there is a
zip line ride, a playground, and trails for
you and your dog to go exploring. But this is only a small park with
limited space.
If you are looking for trails that are a
little more challenging and give you miles of terrain to cover, head west to
the Tomoka Wildlife Management Area and Tiger Bay State Forest. Together, the
two of you can use the miles of trails to explore more than 30,000 acres of cypress
swamps, pine-palmetto, scrubland, wetlands, and more! Despite the damage caused
by the 1998 wildfires, the WMA has managed to recover and is now a spectacular place
to go for a hike with your family and, of course, your four-legged canine buddy.
