Wag! Walkers know River Heights
River Heights is a large community of upscale, single-family
homes situated in the nook created by the intersection of US-1 and the Martin Anderson
Beachline Expressway. The neighborhood is
like most here in Florida in that the homes have lots of shade trees with large yards that
give you and your dog at least some room to play. Access to this community is via Indian River Drive or North Cocoa Boulevard.
For your shopping needs, there is a Walmart Supercenter five
minutes away on the other side of US-1 on Clearlake Road. The one thing about having
a store like this nearby is that it's a one-stop shop. You can find just about anything
you need here, including food and treats for your pup! As for places to eat, the
one thing about Cocoa is that everything is so spread out. There are still plenty of
great local and chain restaurants in town, you'll just have to search them out.
What is the terrain like in River Heights?
When it comes to the terrain in River Heights, the one thing
missing is a sidewalk for the two of you to go walking in safety on. This leaves
you with nothing but the roads. During the morning and evening rush
hours, traffic can be a bit hectic with everyone rushing to and from work. Take advantage of the flat terrain to balance out the slight bit of traffic dodging that you might have to do.
The best time of day to take your dog out for walks is during
the early morning hours. This is before the daily traffic starts up and while
the temperatures are still cooler from the night before.
While
there are sidewalks running along US-1, unless your dog is very comfortable walking
close to heavy traffic, you might want to avoid walking along this road. Always
use a short leash to help maintain better control of your dog for their safety
and yours.
How many greenways are there in River Heights?
The one thing missing in the immediate area is anything in the
form of useable green space. There aren't any parks within walking distance. The
only green space nearby is the berm running along the west bank of the Indian
River. You and your pooch can go for long walks on this berm as it runs for
miles in both directions.
If your pup likes going for rides in the car,
it's only a ten-minute drive to Barks and Recreation, an aptly named dog park on
Pluckebaum Road. Barks and Recreation is an off-leash dog park with separate areas
for large and small dogs, water fountains in both areas, and lots
of room for the pups to run around.
If you want to take your dog to the beach, the nearest dog-friendly
areas are about twenty-five minutes away in Cocoa Beach. They
are open to dogs for a few select hours, so check regulations in the area before visiting.
