Wag! Walkers know Fay Boulevard
Fay Boulevard is one of the major east-west roads running through
the Port St. John area to the north of Cocoa. Along both sides of the road from start to finish, no matter which end you
start at, are vast residential areas filled with single-family homes. The Challenger
7 Elementary School and Fay Park are located approximately in the middle, close
to the intersection with Grissom Parkway.
Beyond one or two restaurants along the way heading east
from Golfview Avenue until you reach the FEC tracks, there are few small businesses
here. From this area, however, it's only another minute to US-1 where you
will find numerous businesses, shops, and both local and chain restaurants.
There is a Publix Supermarket two minutes north of where Fay Boulevard ends at US-1 and North Cocoa Boulevard where you can buy food for everyone in your family, including the little
guy whose tail never stops wagging.
What is the terrain like in Fay Boulevard?
How do you describe the terrain along a major road that
covers several miles from end to end? The ground itself is relatively flat from
one end to the other and, from North Cocoa Boulevard to Grissom Parkway, Fay Boulevard is a four-lane
divided highway that remains bustling with a variety of traffic from early morning
far into the evening. As the main road running through numerous residential
areas, Fay Boulevard tends to get crazy during rush hours.
Luckily for people and pets, there are sidewalks running along both
sides of the road from one end to the other, including on the I-95 overpass.
The sidewalks are paved and wide enough for you and your pooch to use for your
walks. If your dog seems nervous around heavy traffic, you may want to take
your walks early in the morning before rush hour kicks off or late in the
evening when the day's traffic nightmare has finally slowed down.
How many greenways are there in Fay Boulevard?
Can a main thoroughfare be said to have green spaces? Maybe
the paved road itself can't, but there are green spaces along the road where
you and your pooch might get away with playing on as long as they are on a leash. For
example, across the street from the elementary school is Fay Park, where there
are three softball fields, tennis and basketball courts, and plenty of grass for
the two of you to run around on.
For fun, try following Fay Boulevard to its western end on the other
side of Golfview Avenue. Surprisingly, at the end of Fay Boulevard is Fay Lake Wilderness
Park and Off-Leash Dog Park. The dog park offers two massive fenced-in areas
for dogs to run around in without being hampered by a leash. Those who come here love
the fact it's always clean and stocked with plenty of waste bags. Fay Lake on the
south side of the road also has a hiking trail running along it.
