Wag! Walkers know Cocoa Heights
Cocoa Heights is a residential neighborhood on Cocoa Place, next
to North Cocoa Boulevard. Directly to the west is the FEC railroad track,
which is not super busy around the clock, but it will take a while
to get used to the trains rumbling by. On the other side of North Cocoa and a
block east is the Indian River. Along this part of the street, the area is mostly
commercial and retail on both sides of the community. Most of the buildings were built long
after the houses.
While there is a Tractor Supply Company two minutes north on US-1 where you can select from a wide variety of top brand name dog foods
and treats, if you want people food, Walmart is less than ten minutes to the north. Alternatively, you can take Dixon Boulevard west where you will
find a Sav-a-Lot supermarket and several other stores and restaurants.
What is the terrain like in Cocoa Heights?
Cocoa Place is a short dead-end road with no sidewalks. The only
saving grace is that at no time of the day is this road so busy you can't take your
dog for a walk. However, the road is not very long, leaving you with little
option but to take your long walks out along US-1. Keep in mind that US-1 is a bustling road
from early in the morning until long past the end of evening rush hour.
If you are going to go for walkies together along these sidewalks,
be sure you use a short leash that allows you to maintain complete control of your dog
in case the traffic startles them. While it might be tempting to take your dog
for walks along the train tracks, this is not a good idea. Not only would you
be trespassing, but there is a serious risk of an accident occurring
when the trains are going by.
How many greenways are there in Cocoa Heights?
On the other side of the track, there are several very large
water retention ponds put in by the city as part of the water treatment
facilities. They also form part of Bracco Park and have paved walking trails
leading around most of them for you and your dog to make use of. While you could
cut across the track, you run the risk of
injury. Go south on US-1 and cross the tracks using West Highland
Drive.
There are several city parks within a short drive if you are
inclined to use them or you can cross US-1 and walk over to the west bank of
the Indian River. It's only a block away, but there is a long, wide grass berm
running alongside the river you can use for walks. Not only will the
grass be easier on your dog's paws, but the two of you can enjoy watching the boats
cruising by on the water as you saunter along.
