Carlton Terrace is a very large, mostly residential area
along US-1 and Indian River Drive. The housing areas are on the east side of the highway,
while the west side is all businesses. Most of the houses are single-family and
arranged on short streets that help keep traffic down while making for some very
friendly micro-communities. Those who are lucky enough to live on Indian River
Drive have an excellent view out over the water.
While the Cocoa Marketplace may have a fantastic selection
of knick-knacks, geegaws, and assorted other items at the 150 vendor stands, if
you want essentials for your family, including food and treats for the one with the
floppy ear and waggly tail, it's only a five-minute drive to the Walmart Supercenter.
If you don't like the price or quality of the food there, there is a Publix supermarket
less than two minutes further down the same road that Walmart sits on.
What is the terrain like in Carlton Terrace?
Beyond the few luxury homes built along the river, most of
the homes are of average size for a working family community. Most of the
streets have sidewalks for you and your pooch to use for your daily walks.
Be sure you make good use of them as they offer you a lot of safety from the
traffic flowing by.
As a working community, both morning and evening rush hour tend to create a significant amount of traffic for such short
periods each day. There is a sidewalk on each side of US-1 that you can
use, but unless your dog is used to the amount of noise and exhaust coming from the bustling traffic, you may want to walk elsewhere. No matter where
you choose to walk, be sure your dog is on a short leash for their safety and
yours. It gives your dog a sense of security that will help them behave.
How many greenways are there in Carlton Terrace?
Although some of the homes have large yards, you won't
find much in the way of dedicated green space nearby. You can take your dog
slightly north of the community on Indian River Drive where there is a wide grass
berm between the road and river where you can walk while enjoying the view out over
the river.
On the other side of US-1, there is a vast area of woods
with a trail many people use to take their dogs for a walk. Access to the dirt
road is via Cocoa Lakes Drive, just off Michigan Avenue. The path runs towards US-1 before
taking the two of you past two lakes and around them. You can make your walks
over here as long or short as you like and it's far better than being stuck
taking your dog walking on pavement that wears at their pads and can be hot
enough to burn.
