Wag! Walkers know Surfside
Surfside is a neighborhood consisting of two spits of land
sticking out into the canals from South 4th Street. The vast majority of the houses here are
waterfront properties with their own boat and fishing docks in a community of
upscale homes. Most of the houses sit on shady lots with plenty of room for a
pet to run around. The canals are man made
and lead out into the Banana River where you can cruise for miles on the water. Alternatively, if your boat is seaworthy, you can
head up to Port Canaveral!
Living close to South 4th Street gives you direct access to the Ramp
Road Park and, if you keep going east, your journey will end at the Atlantic coast. Shopping is only one block north
on the Minuteman Causeway where you will find a couple of small grocery stores. You can find the basics for your family
and even a small selection of different brands of dog food!
What is the terrain like in Surfside?
Both spits of land have a single road that ends in a cul-de-sac. Cul-de-sacs mean that you never have to worry about heavy through traffic, making it fairly easy to get around without any vehicles speeding by. However, despite being an upscale community, you won't find
any sidewalks to walk on and you and your dog are stuck walking on the streets. With the flat terrain in this area, you shouldn't encounter any steep hills to climb up or down.
Streets are the primary terrain you'll be walking on, at least until you reach South 4th Street. On the south side of this
road, there is a sidewalk that you can use to go all the way to the beach. In fact, the two of you can walk to the beach
in less than twenty minutes! At this end of the street,
there is a public parking area equipped with pet waste disposal bins for you to
use.
How many greenways are there in Surfside?
While there are several parks in Cocoa Beach, there just happens to be one at the end of both roads
in the neighborhood. The Ramp Road Park covers several acres and has playgrounds,
basketball and tennis courts, a boat ramp for launching kayaks and canoes, and plenty of open space for you and your dog to run around on.
Then there is the beach, which is open to dogs from 4th Street down the coast to 16th Street which is on the northern border of
Murkshe Park. Dogs are allowed on the coastal areas for a few hours out of the day, so double check the regulations for the areas you're wanting to access. The other rules in this area are fairly simple: keep your dog on a leash at all times and make use of the pet
waste containers the city has installed at every public crossing. This will ensure that the area stays safe and clean!
