Wag! Walkers know The Boulevards
The Boulevards is a small townhouse community on Canaveral
Boulevard in the northern part of Cape Canaveral. The townhomes are surrounded by apartments and condominiums and are midway between
the east and west sides of the city. To the west
is the Banana River and to the east is
the Atlantic coast and the beach. Being this far north puts you close to the port, the many cruise lines that berth in the area, and the massive
amounts of traffic they generate. Fortunately, most of the traffic sticks to A1A.
A1A is the main road running along the west side of town and is home to a number of small businesses,
restaurants, and lots of parking spaces. Along this busy thoroughfare, you will pass a Publix supermarket, but at
the intersection, there are plenty of other shopping opportunities and, if you cross over
the river, there is a Walmart Superstore and the Merritt Island Mall.
What is the terrain like in The Boulevards?
Most of the walks you plan to take your dog on in this area will be on the
roads as sidewalks seem to be in short supply. Like most areas,
you should expect to see a certain amount of rush hour traffic in this neighborhood. In addition, there are those souls who come off the
ships and think that by cutting through the residential areas, they can beat the
traffic. Sadly, all they do is add to mess and make it harder for you to find a quiet time to stroll.
If you do choose to wander, be sure you stick to roads like Canaveral Beach Boulevard where there are sidewalks and flat terrain to make it easy to go from point A to point B. A short leash is your
best option for walking in this area as it can be a bit busy. It will help you keep your
pooch under control and make them feel more secure.
How many greenways are there in The Boulevards?
The one unfortunate thing about living in Cape Canaveral as
a dog owner is that you can't take your pooch out for long walks on the Cape beaches! However, the
city does allow dogs in almost all city parks as long as they are on a leash which provides great alternatives.
To the east, there is
Cherie Downs Park that offers a large parking lot, public restrooms, public
beach access, and, most importantly, lots of
grass for the two of you to run around and play on.
To the east is the Banana River Park and Manatee River Park.
The former offers a vast area of grass that is large enough for a
full-sized soccer pitch and plenty of space to keep your distance from any other park users. There is plenty of parking along with
public restrooms, shuffleboard courts, and a small putting green with several
holes to practice on.
