Hugo City Center

Hugo City Center

Lions Park is situated next to Hugo City Hall, and features 10-acres of space to walk with your furry family member. You and your pup can stroll along the paths while Fido sniffs the plants and trees, or play a game of fetch in the open grassy area. After some energetic activity, find a shaded bench or picnic table to rest and enjoy a cool drink of water. Kids will also enjoy the skate park or playground, and there is plenty of off-street parking. If you are looking for a longer hike, head over to the Hardwood Creek Regional Trailhead on Frenchman Road. The trail covers 9.5 miles from Hugo to the Washington/Chisago county line in Forest Lake.

Oneka Ridge

Oneka Ridge

Oak Shore Park is located on Exhall Avenue at the northern tip of Bald Eagle Lake. This 10 acres offers a large open grassy area where your pooch can romp and roll around in addition to a paved trail that meanders through a natural area. While hiking with your pup, you can admire the flowers and plants, or sit at one of the picnic tables and relax. Kids love spending time on the basketball court or playground, and the park is perfect for sledding in the winter. Another fun feature in the park is the Community Brick Oven where neighbors can get together and socialize with a meal, and leashed pups are welcome to sit with their families at the picnic tables.

Rice Creek/ Circle Pines

Rice Creek/ Circle Pines

Located about 11 miles west of Hugo in Circle Pines, the Rice Creek North Regional Park is not only a wonderful park for the family, it also features a fenced dog park for Fido. The dog park area offers open areas for your pooch to run and play, and there are usually other pups around to socialize. The double gated entry makes entering and exiting the park safe, but you will need to bring your own water jugs from the water fountain by the parking lot. If you want to spend time with your pup outside the dog park, take advantage of the 15 miles of bike trails. Kids will enjoy the playground, and you and your pooch can relax on a bench and watch them play.

Bald Eagle Lake

Bald Eagle Lake

When Fido is looking for an afternoon adventure, travel 4 miles south from Hugo to the White Bear Township, home of the Bald Eagle Otter Lake Regional Dog Park. Your pup can romp and roam over the 12-acre park while sniffing the trees and plants along the way. There are walking trails within the park for some added exercise, and the area is well maintained. Be sure to bring plenty of water if it’s a hot day, and let your pup run off all his excess energy. Outside the dog park, the family can enjoy the playground and picnic area, or bring the boat and take a cruise around the lake.

Carnelian Junction/ Pine Point

Carnelian Junction/ Pine Point

Ten miles southeast of Hugo, the Gateway Segment of the Willard Munger Trail is in the Pine Point Regional Park in Stillwater. This hiking trail is part of the Rails to Trail Conservancy, and the trailhead is located in the park. You and Fido can spend hours walking along the path through the peaceful natural area admiring the wildlife. You can also detour onto the Brown’s Creek Trail that travels into the touristy section of Stillwater. While hiking, you will probably see other pups out with their parents, and you might also see some equestrians enjoying the multi-use trail. On your way home, stop by Sal’s Angus Grill for some great food and relax at the outdoor tables.
