Newburg
Newburg is home to the Roehner Park Forest, a swath of land donated for the preservation of the giant redwoods that lie within it. The park features almost 2 miles of trails where you and your doggo are sure to enjoy the well-maintained forest floor surface and the views of the massive redwoods towering over you as you pass beneath them. If you happen to look down, you’ll also find a rich undergrowth of shrubs and herbs, and the pup might just detect some small mammals hiding among the ferns. Wooden benches appear periodically for some rest and to take in the peaceful quiet and fragrance of this deep forest tract. You and Fido won’t want to leave this barktiful place!

Humboldt Hill/ Fields Landing
This neighborhood in nearby Eureka is where you’ll find the Headwaters Forest Reserve, about 7,500 acres of conserved redwood forest that also features lush undergrowth of shrubs and ferns. Originally owned by the Pacific Lumber Company, it’s now a dog-friendly park with 2 trails through the redwoods: Elk River Trail and the Salmon Pass Trail. Your fur-pup must be under voice control or on a leash and is only allowed on the Elk River Trail because of the sensitive ecology on the Salmon Pass Trail. Endangered species that you may spy on your walk with Fido include the spotted owl and the seabird called the marbled murrelet, both of which make their homes on the large redwood branches high above. This is a lovely 3-mile out-and-back walk that connects with a loop. Fido will love the pawrrific sights, sounds and scents!

This is a woofderful place to socialize your pooch as many people bring their dogs to romp on the greenways, off leash. Be aware that there are no fences, however, and when the fields are in use, excitable or reactive dogs should be leashed. With restrooms and water fountains provided, this is a pawrfect place to exercise the fur-pup while the family enjoys watching Junior play football or baseball!

Fortuna City Center
Lying on the edge of the Fortuna City Center is Table Bluff County Park Beach, located within the Mike Thompson Wildlife Area, that provides access to the beautiful and fierce Humboldt Bay. This dog-friendly beach features hiking trails on the bluff along the wave slope, and you will often see hang gliders launching from some of the higher bluffs toward the bay. Your fur-pup must be leashed during the nesting season (Mar 1st to Sept 15th) of the endangered piping plover that makes this his home, and on unleashed voice control at other times. Typical northwest succulents are scattered along the bluffs and on the wave slope, and there are picnic tables with grills for that fresh air meal you will be sharing with your pooch. Arf! Also in the city center neighborhood is the pawtastic Fortuna Dog Park, which features 2 separate areas for large and small dogs, water buckets and bowls, and toys. For the humans’ enjoyment and comfort, there are shade trees and lovely flower plantings.

Ferndale
Ferndale, about 9 miles from Newburg, is home to the Centerville Beach County Park, a doggo’s haven for romping and cavorting at the water’s edge. Here, dogs can run off-leash everywhere from October through February, and are limited to the wave slope the rest of the year. If the tide is out, the walkable beach extends to about 5 miles. You and your pup might encounter ATVs and people on horseback on this beach, so be sure to watch out for them. Parking is free, and the park provides rest rooms where you can get drinking water for your pooch, too. If you’re from away but staying in Ferndale overnight, The Shaw House Inn is just the spot. They offer pet friendly rooms for a small additional fee, and other amenities include free breakfast and WiFi, along with family rooms and cable TV. A pawsome place to overnight with your fur-baby!
