Wag! Walkers know Buena Vista
Buena Vista is a residential neighborhood located in southeast Washington, D.C. The Hillcrest Recreation Center is a few blocks north in the adjacent community, as is a large shopping complex in neighboring Naylor Gardens that can be reached on foot outside the immediate Buena Vista neighborhood.
If you enjoy daily walks with your dog in the region, you will need some warm outerwear to brave sub-freezing temperatures in winter months. Light snow is common and occasional heavier snow events can occur, although these are infrequent. Be prepared for icy conditions during winter months and, when weather is severe, find indoor activities for you and your pooch until the weather improves. Summers are humid and see frequent thunderstorms. Avoid walking your dog in extreme heat or when storms are imminent. Occasional rain showers are frequent in spring and fall and rain gear will keep you dry while strolling with your pet.
What is the terrain like in Buena Vista?
Buena Vista is a small residential community bordered by 28th Street on the north, Alabama Avenue on the east, Suitland Parkway on the south, and the Maryland border on the east. There are a variety of dwellings including a seniors complex, apartments, row houses, and free standing dwellings in the area, much of which is part of a public housing complex referred to as Knox Hill. A police station and facility is located on the west side of the region.
The terrain is at a high elevation and slopes to the south. Inclines are gentle and there are no steep hills to contend with for pedestrians and pets walking in the area. Tree lined streets also have separate pedestrian sidewalks so you and your dog don't have to share the road with vehicles. Trees provide some shade and grassy berms provide cool footing along residential roads. There is a natural treed area in the neighborhood and several small wooded areas nearby.
How many greenways are there in Buena Vista?
Buena Vista is located just north of the Oxon Run Park. This park, although nearby, is not easily accessible on foot as it is located across the Suitland Parkway and Buena Vista residents need to cross the freeway and train tracks to reach it. Naylor Road to the east provides pedestrian crossings to reach the park. This natural treed park occupies 126 acres and provides natural habitat to local flora and fauna with deciduous forest and wetlands. There are trails in the park for dog walkers, but remember to keep your dog on a leash and be prepared to clean up after them.
There are two other nearby community parks to the northwest including Alger Park and Avalon Playground. They both have treed and grassy areas with recreational amenities although they are a several bock hike from the Buena Vista neighborhood.
A larger park is located a short drive to the northwest.
