My pet has the following symptoms:
I came across a two-months young stray / street puppy suffering from a partially broken lower jaw, caused by some bigger dog around. I kept him at home for four days with myself and took him to vet everyday for painkillers, anti-biotics, wound cleaning and other medicines. The puppy was very active and cheerful and was eating properly. On the fifth day, upon the completion of his course of medicines, I dropped him back with his mother. Next morning, when we went to check how he was doing, we found him in shock. He was again attacked by some dog that morning and had his lung ruptured / suffered hemorrhage (he had air under the skin, belly was hanging on one side and bluish, has air bubble-like forming on the side of stomach on breathing and was in a state of shock). I took him to the regular vet who informed me that it was a bad case of lung rupture and the puppy wasn't in a condition to be operated upon and gave him drip, medicines (painkillers etc.) and informed me that he won't survive for more than 48 hours. I thought of giving it another try and took him to a private clinic where they said that those air bubbles can be be treated eventually and if their is blood in lungs, the puppy has been given medicine to bring that out of the system and asked us to bring him back next morning. By this time, it had been around 10-11 hours of the injury. In next one hour, I tried to feed him cerelac and some water with the help of a syringe, which he managed to have (struggled a lot with swallowing, but had - I can say this as nothing except a few drops fell out of his mouth). But by then, the condition of the puppy at home started deteriorating rapidly. His eyes were closing, every touch was causing him to scream and try to bite, he was not able to stand, was highly disoriented and once fallen, wasn't able to get up. I took him to the same clinic again at almost midnight, and asked the doctor if it looked like rabies. This was my biggest mistake. As the doctor and two other helpers, held on to it and made him stand on the table to examine. the puppy was screaming in pain and of course, very agitated upon being touched. He couldn't stand properly and was very shaky, wobbly while trying to stand. The medical team by now was so apprehensive of touching him that the puppy even fell off the table (higher than an average ironing board) but they didn't touch and stopped him from falling. With that swollen, bluish belly by now, I can't even fathom the pain the poor little one must have felt. The doctor convinced us that it had rabies and we eventually had to put him down. After the dog was no more alive, the doctor checked for what was under the skin causing crackling. It was air under the skin and blood in lungs. While researching online about the symptoms of pulmonary contusion and/or lung hemorrhage, I can see that all this happened to him, which we (including the doctor) mistook (maybe) for rabies. I am so heartbroken, thinking that he could have lived. But by the end, his eyes were closing, he was fainting, collapsing and in immense pain, that I can't even be sure if he would have survived. And all I am left now with is guilt, pain, heartache and trauma of seeing him suffer so much in his last few hours. I would please like to hear from you what it could be, so that I am more aware in future if such a case comes up.
