Wag! Walkers know Western Malibu
Life's a beach when you're walking your dog in Western Malibu, CA. If you're lucky enough to live in this iconic beach town or spend a few days on vacation, you're going to want to experience the sand and surf with your dog. Though the state of California has strict regulations for dogs on public beaches, there are still great options where your dog can get his fill of salty spray.
Western Malibu is dog-friendly, and if you head over to Leo Carrillo State Park you'll run into plenty of other people with dogs, and your pup will find lots of friends to chase around on the sand. Farther down the beach you can find several hiking trails that will lead you along tree-lined paths for an entirely different experience. This beach is family-friendly and perfect for a day out with your human and fur family. Not all trails are dog-friendly though, so watch for signs designating the boundary.
What is the terrain like in Western Malibu?
Everyone
agrees the best place to walk your dog in Western Malibu is Leo Carrillo State
Park. Only a short distance from town you'll find miles of beaches with easy
access to parking. While you may be envisioning soft sand, there are many
options for you and your dog to explore.
Be
prepared for some parts to be rocky with more difficult and unpredictable
footing. The upside is you'll have plenty of tide pools and caves to explore,
but the downside is you'll need to watch your step. Farther down the shore,
you'll find that beautiful soft sand that is gentler on your joints and your
dogs' paws. This is a great spot for a run and a quick swim in the ocean.
There
are also several hiking trails available. Though these are well traveled, they
are still natural so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and keep an eye out
for rocks and roots in the trail.
How many greenways are there in Western Malibu?
South
Beach at Leo Carrillo State Park is a fun spot to explore with your dog. This
is a nice, sandy beach right at the mouth of a creek flowing from Arroyo Sequit
into the ocean. At low tide, there are even exposed pools you and your dog can
explore. It's a perfect spot for a relaxing dog walk with your family.
If
you continue walking, you'll find yourself on North beach, a wide swath of
shoreline with soft sand for playing. Dogs are allowed north of
lifeguard tower 3 and they must be on a leash, but you'll find plenty of
space to relax with your family or take your dog for a run.
If
you head further inland, you'll find several different hiking trails close to
the campground. Leashed dogs are welcome here too. The trails wind their way up
the hillside and provide beautiful views of the ocean from a higher
perch.
